I Could Be Pregnant, How Do I Get A Test?
If you’re worried you or your partner might be pregnant, don’t panic – there are lots of people who can help. If you’ve had unprotected sex in the last 72 hours, then emergency contraception is an option. Go to what is emergency contraception? for more info.
Where can I get a free test?
If more than 72 hours have passed since you had unprotected sex, you can get a free, confidential pregnancy test, and someone to talk things through with at your Family Planning clinic, Caledonia Youth, your local young person’s drop-in or your doctor.
How does a pregnancy test work?
A pregnancy test only takes a few minutes and can be done one week after a missed period or two weeks after you’ve had sex. If you are pregnant, these services (above) can help you think about how you feel and the way forward that is best for you. The test involves giving a urine sample.
Getting the results: at a clinic or drop-in
Finding out you’re pregnant can be a very emotional time for both of you.
The results only take a few minutes and are very accurate. If your test result is positive (showing you are pregnant), the person who took the test will be there to help you. They may advise you to speak to someone you really trust, like someone in your family, a family friend, or together with your partner, if that’s an option.
Getting the results: home test
If you’ve taken a test at home (perhaps from the chemist or a friend) and find the result is positive, speak to someone as soon as you can so that you can get the support you need. If you don’t know who to talk to, visit a Healthy Respect drop-in, they provide confidential help and advice.
How do I feel about being pregnant? How does he feel about it?
Everyone feels different about pregnancy – you and your partner might be excited, or feel nervous and stressed. And you might not feel the same way about it. If you can, try to talk with your partner about how you are feeling, and listen to how he is feeling too. Finding out you’re pregnant can be a very emotional time for both of you.
